So when your partner asks “what happened?” and you can’t answer yet, it’s not because you’re withholding. It’s because your brain is still mid-process. You literally don’t have the answer yet. The filing system is still running, and asking you to narrate it in real time is like asking someone to describe a movie while they’re still watching it.

The midlife moment when you stop apologizing

The more present they were, the more they connected, the more recovery they needed afterward. Not because connection drained them but because they processed it at a depth that required neural consolidation.

You don’t need quiet despite having had a good time. You need quiet because you had a good time - and your brain took all of it in.

You were never broken

I’m writing this on a Sunday morning, alone in my kitchen, coffee getting cold because I forgot about it while I was thinking. Last night we had dinner with friends. It was lovely. I drove home in silence, sat in the driveway for a few minutes, and came inside when I was ready.
