The reason you walked into the kitchen? That was logistical. Temporary. Disposable by design.

That thing where you walk into a room and forget why you’re there? It has a name. Psychologists call it the “doorway effect,” and a 2011 study by Gabriel Radvansky at the University of Notre Dame, published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology, demonstrated something remarkable about it.

Radvansky found that the simple act of passing through a doorway triggers the brain to file away the current mental “episode” and start a new one. The physical transition from one space to another causes the brain to create a new event boundary. The thought you carried into the room belonged to the previous episode, and your brain - doing exactly what it was built to do - archived it to make room for whatever comes next.

This happens to everyone. It happens to twenty-five-year-olds. It happens to people with exceptional memories. It’s not a sign of cognitive decline. It’s a sign that your brain is actively organizing experience into manageable segments.

But here’s what makes it feel worse as you get older: you notice it more. Not because it happens more frequently, but because you’ve been told to watch for it. Every cultural message about aging and memory loss has trained you to interpret a perfectly normal brain function as evidence that you’re falling apart.

You’re not falling apart. You walked through a door, and your brain did its job.

What your memory chooses to keep says something beautiful about you

I want you to think about the things you remember without trying.

Not the facts you’ve studied. Not the passwords you’ve memorized. The things that just live in you, without effort, without rehearsal - the memories that surface when you’re driving alone or lying awake at three in the morning.

It keeps a curated collection of moments that carried emotional weight. Your memory is not a filing cabinet. It’s a museum, and the curator has always been your heart, not your head.

That is not a flaw. That is the most human thing about you.

The guilt of forgetting - and why you can let it go

I think the reason this pattern bothers us so much is that we’ve internalized a very specific idea about what a “good memory” looks like. A good memory, we’ve been told, is reliable. It tracks appointments. It holds onto names. It keeps a running inventory of what needs to be done and when.

By that standard, most of us feel like we’re failing. We forget the thing we were told ten minutes ago. We miss appointments. We repeat stories because we can’t remember who we’ve already told.

But that standard was set by a culture that values productivity over presence. It measures memory by its usefulness, not by its depth.

Your brain was never trying to be useful. It was trying to help you survive, and survival - for a social, emotional, deeply feeling species like ours - has always depended more on remembering how things felt than on remembering where things are.

A 2018 study published in Neuron by Richards and Frankland at the University of Toronto actually argued that forgetting is not a failure of memory but a core function of it. The brain deliberately lets go of irrelevant detail so that it can generalize, adapt, and make better decisions in the future. Forgetting the specifics of your Tuesday morning isn’t a bug. It’s the brain clearing space for what actually matters.

You can stop apologizing for the things you forget. Your brain isn’t broken. It’s selective. And its selection criteria have always leaned toward the things that made you feel something.

You were always remembering the right things

The next time you find yourself standing in a room with no idea why you’re there, I want you to try something.

You are carrying all of it, effortlessly, without trying, because your nervous system decided a long time ago that these things were worth more than any grocery list could ever be.

Your memory isn’t failing you. It has been protecting what matters since before you had any say in the decision.

And the thing you came into the kitchen for? It’ll come back to you. It always does - usually the moment you stop trying to remember, sit down on the couch, and hear the opening notes of a song you thought you’d forgotten.
